Race Day is here! Looks like we might have perfect weather for the event. Don’t forget to pack some dry cloths in the sweat check bag, and some after race nutrition  as well. I will be walking the 5km and then be around for the 10km start and race. Can’t wait to see all of you tomorrow! Have fun and do the best you can.

Meeting place – we are meeting in the race area in Confederation Park, between the fountain and Elgin Street. The 5km participants are meeting at 4:20pm, and moving over to the race area around 4:45pm. The 10km walkers are meeting at 5:50pm, moving over to the race area around 6:15pm.

Parking – please allocate plenty of time for finding parking, it can be a little crazy. Do consider many of the underground parking garages, but the NAC is tricky to get in and out of around the race. Some people have had good luck with World Exchange plaza. But to aim to be at the start line for 6:00pm (for the 10km walkers).

Bathroom visits – if you think you will need a pit stop before the race starts, please try to schedule one well before 6pm. The line-ups can be long and you likely will not have time after the warm-up and lining up at the start.

Water station for 5km - at Queen Elizabeth and Argyle.

Water stations for 10km – Preston Street (@4km), Queen Elizabeth (@6km), Queen Elizabeth and Argyle.

New timing chip – the ChampionChip that you are attaching to your shoe is the same as last year, it is a souvenir single use chip. No need to remember to take it off at the finish line. No fines if it is not returned!

No need to carry anything – I will not be carrying anything during the race. I’m checking everything at the “sweat check” before the start. Provide personal info on the back of your bib, that’s all you need. Travel light and you will go faster and have a more pleasant race.

Dropping out of the race – removing yourself from the race is permitted and encouraged if you are not feeling well. Do not remove your bib! Transportation is available back to the recovery area for all participants. Please wait curb-side.

The 2h time limit – from the race info booklet: “the course will open to traffic on a rolling schedule and participants not meeting the time limit will be asked to use the path system along the route for safety reasons. The finish line will remain open until the last runner has finished his or her race.” We know that this is true from experience, nobody will be prevented from finishing their event.

After the race – please remember to stretch when you arrive at the finish line. There will be no supervised stretching for the team. Make sure you cover legs and upper body before you head home. You do not need to wait around for all finishers, unless you want of course.

I hope this covers most of your burning questions. If I missed something, let me know!

/Anna

AWP Fundraising Page

Send your friends, family and colleagues this way!

A big hello from me to all of this year’s AWP members!

Some of you are new to the team this year and therefore, don’t know me  yet. My name is Cleo Thompson and Anna and I started this team together just after I lost my very dear grandmother to cancer in 2008.  I miss being on the team this year but am a bit over extended this  spring between my two full time jobs, my two small children and a much needed vacation last month (first in 3 years!). I hope to get out to walk with you all soon.

Anna has kept me updated with the tremendous success of the team again this year. I hear we are over 40 members strong and that there is a fundraising goal of $10000 this year… Let’s see, some quick math tells me that’s about $250 to be raised by each of you to meet the goal. No problem! We raised just over $7000 the first year we did this, which did me very proud. That money was matched (at 2.5 times) by the government making it around $18,000 which we specifically donated to the brand new Ottawa Cancer Centre… a place my family could have used desperately just months before while we watched my Granny lose her battle. Last year, with some amazing fund-raising rock stars and a very committed team, we raised an astounding $21,000 all on our own!!

Armed With Poles has gained the attention of the media and community. We have a reputation of showing up on race day with a head turning presence at the start line and a very noticeable sum of money raised. I can’t wait to see what you guys do this year and I will be cheering from the side lines!

Best of luck!
Cleo Thompson

Yes, this is it folks, our last week of walking together as a team. We are now maintaining our fitness, so a few easy walks is all we need leading up to race day. Now is not the time for intensity, intervals or hills. Instead focus on a gentle tapering down and making sure the sleep and hydration are taken care of.

Here are the walks for this week:
Tuesday May 24 @ 9:30am Champlain Bridge parking lot map
Thursday May 26 @ 6:15pm Convention centre 3rd floor, by the escalator outside the Race Expo. map (please note the time)
Saturday May 28 @ 5:00pm 5km event, 6:30pm 10km event!

Hope to see you all on Thursday as we will be handing out the team shirts. If you can’t make it, you are welcome to stop by at booth #305 at the expo to grab it at a later time.

Race day here we come!

As always we will be having a race weekend social, this year we keep the tradition of the post race dinner going. I hope you can join all of your friends and training buddies to compare notes and share your stories on Sunday May 29th at 6:30pm. Come and celebrate your achievements and perhaps you will be the lucky one for a draw price?

Our own dynamo Helene Sylvestre has offered up the 19th floor of her condo building as our venue. The dinner will be catered by The Foodery and chef Bernard Durand. This way we can mingle, get a chance to talk to everyone and not have to worry about the noise level. The parking is free and we will have a smashing view of Ottawa from this newly renovated party space.

The cost will be $35 per person. The buffet dinner will be served on china, with real utensils and linen napkins. Wine, juice and other refreshments are included in this price. Please pay by cheque or cash at the dinner.

Here’s our menu:

Thai green curry chicken sauce to be served on a bed of rice vermicelli
Composed salad
Arugula salad with a house vinaigrette
Chicken curry Asian dumplings with its sauce
Plate of imported cheeses
Fresh baguettes and butterballs
Individual apple torte

RSVP by Wednesday May 25th and payment due at the dinner. If you can’t make it for some reason, we respectfully ask that you pay your share later. Please email me or comment on this post, hope you can join us!

Only two weeks to go to race day, can you believe it?! If you missed a few more walks than you had preferred, don’t give up now. Every walk over the next two weeks will make a difference. And if your training plans have worked out well, do take care of your maintenance over the next  14 days. The intensity workouts are behind us and now we are focusing on maintaining our fitness and making sure we are energized and injury free on race day.

We are walking on the long weekend, it might be a nice start to an otherwise busy long weekend? We will walk part of the race course, but will skip the more urban section in the beginning of the course.

Here are the walks for this week:

Tuesday May 17 @ 9:30am Experimental Farm map (Arboretum loop or choice of the group)
Thursday May 19 @ 6:30pm The Mill Restaurant map (two provinces walk)
Saturday May 21 @ 9:30am Canal Ritz map (Pretoria bridge to Bronson loop)

I am very impressed with the dedication I have seen this year. The fitness improvements are unprecedented, after our 10km walk this weekend I heard many comments of “was that really 10km”! Everyone is ready for race day, now it is a matter of taking care of hydration, sleep and nutrition…and the rest is history!

One of the big hits at the nutrition talk was the part about natural electrolyte drinks, in addition to coconut water, we all seemed to love the apricot water that you can make yourself at home. Here is the recipe and a message from Judi:

Apricot Water
1 litre of water
6-8 dried organic – sulfite free – apricots (6 if they are large and plump or 8 if they are a little on the small side)

Put the apricots in the bottom of a glass 1 litre pitcher and fill with water.  Allow to sit approximately 8 hours.  Squeeze out the apricots and refrigerate the electrolyte water.

I recommend drinking it on long walks and hot days.  It’s also perfect to include in your post-workout smoothie to help alleviate muscle cramping.
Enjoy!

Judi

Two years ago this team was created with the intention of giving back to the community and our little part of the world. In the process we all got a little fitter and stronger.  Here is another opportunity to contribute – that won’t cost you more than your old running shoes and a toonie.

The organization “Sole responsibility” collects and sends gently used running shoes to Africa. So as you are upgrading your running shoes before the big race, here’s a chance to give those old ones a new life.

I will be collecting shoes at all the remaining walks before the race, please bring along a toonie too if you can. If you prefer to donate directly in one of the many stores that participate, that’s an option too.

If you are curious about this organization, you can read more about them here.

We  have increased intensity as well as the total time of our workouts over the past few weeks. I have seen tremendous improvement in fitness levels all around! The hard work and the tenacity is really paying off. We have at least another week of hard work and then we will start to taper down for the race weekend.

This coming Saturday walk is our Grand Finale of Saturday walks – we will walk the race course. As always there will be options with different distances. There really isn’t a need to walk to entire race course now, you are fit enough to finish on race day. This is simply a way to get familiar with the new layout of the course.

Here are the walks for this week:
Tuesday May 10 @ 9:30am Champlain Bridge parking lot map
Thursday May 12 @ 6:30pm The Mill Restaurant map
Saturday May 14 @ 9:30am City Hall Festival Plaza map

This Saturday join us to walk the race course, partial or full distance.

If you are not able to join us on these dates, keep up the good work on your own!

/Anna

With the base building phase of the training behind us, we can now shift our focus to bigger and better things. It is time to put a little bit of effort and energy into the fund raising! In past years this team has done a tremendous job of raising money as a group, together we are strong. With 4 weeks to go to race day – now is the time to get organized.

We have a team page on the Ottawa Hospital Foundation web-page. Go to this link and click on the “join team” button in the upper left corner. This will let you set up your own page and you can even add your own photo. From here you can email friends and family all over the world and tell them about your hard work and what we are working towards.

This year we are asking that everyone tries for $250 in fund raising per person. You will  be surprised how easy it is to reach that goal. If you reach that level you will get your entry fee to the race refunded. Also – there will be great prices rewarded within our team. Last year we had prices from Leki, Bushtukah and Solefit Orthotics.
